Firefighter Tony Futch was recognized as 2003 Firefighter of the Year at the Templeton Firefighters’ Annual Recognition and Appreciation Dinner held Saturday, January 17th. The award is given to the firefighter whose performance, dedication and concern for the department throughout the year stood above the rest. The Firefighter of the Year is selected by their peers and confirmed by the Chief Officers.

Tony became a member of the Department in 2002, having completed the required training and attending fire department drills for over a year. Tony has furthered his training by attending Rescue courses including, Rescue Systems, cliff side rescue as well as other related training classes

“Tony combines a great personality, a great attitude, and a tremendous dedication to the fire department,” said Fire Chief Greg O’Sullivan. “His peers overwhelmingly supported Tony for the annual award.”

Other awards presented at the dinner included: Ten-year service bars to Firefighters Frank Sprague and Jay Short along with five-year service bars to Engineer Dave Tice and Firefighters Steve Barckley and Scott Reynolds. One-year service plaques were presented to Susan Gibson and Joshua Gibson. Firefighter with most calls went to Jessica Gibson, who responded to 332 of the Departments 502 emergency calls. The firefighter attending most drills bar was presented to Joe Franzone who attended 100% of all training drills.

During the dinner Chief O’Sullivan noted the dedication of the department’s firefighters giving their response to the San Simeon earthquake as a prime example. Within 20 minutes of the event 16 of the 23 firefighters had reported in at the fire station to provide support and service to the community.
