Born in Nakskov, Laaland, Denmark, Chief Clausen moved to the U.S. in 1886, landing in Templeton in 1897 to farm. In 1900, he opened a general store. Later he manufactured brick in a building on the SW corner of Main & 4th Streets later to be known as the Clausen Building. He also worked as the manager for the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company, which was also co-located in his building. Fritz operated the first gasoline pumping station in Templeton. Chief Clausen was married to Lulu Johnson and had three children Lester, Harold, and Thelma. He was a member of the Lutheran Church and of the Fraternal Brotherhood.
