1952-1957 Fire Chief

Name: Noel Bennet

Rank: Fire Chief

Years Of Service: 1952-1957

Service Award(s):

Noel Bennett was born on October 24, 1913 in Summerland California where his father was working on the new Highway 101 between San Jose and Ventura. The family relocated each time the working crew was moved. Noel‘s mother grew tired of moving and settled in Templeton when Noel was 3 years old. The family established a gas station, a small gro-cery store and a campground on Main Street between 7th and 8th Streets. Noel attended Templeton schools and Cal Poly.

Noel established a blacksmith and welding business behind the gas station (building still stands on the Northeast corner of 8th and Main). He was known for his innovation and workman-ship, repairing many of the farm implements of the day. He was also artistic in his trade, crafting a number of welding sculptures.

Noel was very civic-minded and was affiliated with the Fire Department his entire life. He was the first Fire Chief to have a dedicated fire phone in his home (and eventually in his shop, too). Noel made many a repair of fire equipment in those early days.

When not working or volunteering, Noel enjoyed photography, but was madly in love with the ocean and spent many happy days on his small boat at Morro Bay
