1957-1976 Fire Chief

Name: Don Stockdale

Rank: Fire Chief

Years Of Service: 1957-1976

Service Award(s):

This second ‘tour’ for Chief Stockdale combined with his first appointment makes Chief Stockdale the longest tenured fire chief in the department‘s history, over 30+ years. Chief Stockdale led the department through many changes and im-provements. He purchased the department‘s first new truck, along with another reserve engine; he signed the first mutual aid agreement with the County Fire Department; purchased the first self-contained breathing apparatus; and, began the annexation of properties west of Highway 101.

Chief Stockdale saw the fire district be combined with the newly formed Community Services District, becoming a mem-ber of the original Board of Directors. After serving on the Board, Don became the District‘s first paid General Manager. Unfortunately, Chief Stockdale died unexpectedly in 1979 shortly after accepting the new position.

The firehouse is dedicated to Chief Stockdale for his “lifetime devoted to community service.”
