Chief Stockdale was born and raised in Templeton and attended Templeton schools and graduated from Templeton High School in 1930. Chief Stockdale, like his father Claud before him, worked for the Templeton School District, as the auto shop teacher and chief of maintenance and transportation, retiring after 39 years of service.

Chief Stockdale was the Fire Chief at the time Lester Plumm was killed and other firefighters injured during a garage fire in 1940. During this tenure as Fire Chief, he replaced the fire bell with a siren and purchased the de-partment‘s first fire apparatus with pumping capabilities. Chief Stockdale would later be the Chief again from 1963 to 1976.
