1976-1979 Fire Chief

Name: Dave Kaiser

Rank: Fire Chief

Years Of Service: 1976-1979

Service Award(s):

Dave Kaiser began his service as a volunteer firefighter for the Templeton Fire Department in August 1968. As he recalls, “there was very little equipment at this time, and all of it as old castoffs from other fire departments. The ‘attack truck’ was the only thing that was up-to-date. It was a 1964 Ford with an 800 gallon tank, two 1″ reel lines, and a P.T.O. pump.” Every fire was put out using this truck for many years, except the fire at the Feed Mill.

During his time as Fire Chief, the Fire Department received more funding and was able to purchase multiple turnouts and self-contained breathing apparatus. In 1978, Kaiser oversaw the purchase of a new fire truck for $43,000.

Kaiser was the Fire Chief at the time of the Templeton Feed and Gain fire on August 24, 1979. “The biggest thing that happened while I was Fire Chief was the burning of the feed mill. Up until that time it was the biggest mutual-aid response in the county, it was the tallest building in the county, it was the first time we used our new pumper, the first time Cal Poly used their new snorkel truck, and the first time I rode in a helicopter,” Kaiser said. He resigned as Chief of the fire department months later to spend more time on his auto repair business.
