Chief Steinbeck has the distinction of being Templeton‘s first fire official at the age of 30. He was a member of the first Board of Directors which was formed on November 5, 1887. He oversaw the purchase of the hose cart and accessories and the construction of the first ‘Firehouse’. He resigned his position after only one year, but was appointed again in 1898. Chief Steinbeck was employed as an agent for Cyclone Windmills and sold hardware related to water supply systems.

Chief Steinbeck was born in Turkey and immigrated to the U.S. in 1859 taking residence first in Massachusetts prior to traveling to the West Coast. Chief Steinbeck was the uncle of the famous author John Steinbeck. He was a member and Chairman (1906) of the Presbyterian Church.
