Alfred Willhoit was born on March 28 in Woodbridge, California. His family moved to Templeton when he was two years old. His father, John B. Willhoit, served as direc-tor of the Presbyterian Church in Templeton from 1916 to 1937. Willhoit graduated from Templeton High School in 1932 and later owned and operated a plumbing pump shop until 1954. He was then postmaster from 1954 to 1977.

Willhoit belonged to the Templeton Fire Department for 35 years. He was also very active in the community and served on several community boards throughout his life. Willhoit was on the Templeton School Board for four years and on the Templeton Sanitary Board for thirty years. He was the chairman of the Sanitary Board from 1970 to 1976. He was also on the county‘s Advisory Board, the Templeton Park Advisory Board, Waterworks District No. 5 Advisory Board and on the Templeton Community Services District Board. He was also the president of the San Luis Obispo County Historical Society. Willhoit belonged to the National Association of Postmasters, Tri-Counties Boat and Ski Club, the Paso Robles Chamber of Commerce and the Templeton Lions Club.
