Two vehicles damaged after grass fire breaks out in Templeton

Templeton Fire Department Chief Aggson says damage from a small fire that broke out in Templeton Tuesday afternoon is estimated at $45K.

The fire broke out just before 12:45 p.m. in the 200 block of Posada Lane, near La Posada Medical Center and Twin Cities Community Hospital.

The fire is believed to have been caused by a truck that back-fired as it drove by the area. According to Interim Fire Chief Keith Aggson, two witnesses heard a loud back-fire from a passing truck and within 30 seconds saw smoke coming from the adjacent landscaping that quickly burst into flames – all within the time it took to call for help.

“The moisture levels are very low and the oily plants ignited quickly, burning very hot and moving into the trees,” said Aggson. Seeing the flames rising over the top of medical center buildings, nearby construction workers raced to the scene with a water truck they had on site, and began hosing down the fire in the trees just as Templeton Fire and Cal Fire arrived on the scene.

Templeton Fire  says two vehicles were damaged and a quarter acre of grass was burned.

Cal Fire and Atascadero Fire department responded on the initial request.

Mark Lisa, the CEO of Twin Cities Community Hospital, says the Founders Pavilion, which holds some administrative offices for the hospital, a conference center, and small clinic, was evacuated after some embers from the fire caused a second fire in a lot near the building.

He says the evacuation was for safety reasons due to smoke in the area and no one was in any danger. The building was also not threatened, he added.

Lisa says the evacuation only lasted for a few minutes while the fire was extinguished and cars were moved away from the area.
