Q&A with AED recipient Margy Crout from Templeton Presbyterian

Q.  How did you find out about the Callahan Heart Safe Program?

A.  Last December a group of lay volunteers and their spouses from Templeton Presbyterian were gathered for a meeting, and one of the volunteers expressed a desire to have an AED available at the church. My husband mentioned to the group that I was a CPR instructor, and our pastor asked what an AED would cost. When I told him, the group became rather silent, but he nevertheless asked me to follow up on the idea. I began to think that I might look for a grant to offset the cost. Then the spouse one of our members, who was at that time a fire fighter for San Luis Obispo, asked if I had heard of the Callahan Heart Safe Program. I remembered reading about it in the local newspaper but had forgotten about it. I contacted Lynne Callahan by e-mail soon after our meeting, and she immediately replied to my request for an AED for our church and placed us on their waiting list. That brings us to the present, to when Brandon Wall from the Templeton Fire Dept. called us to say that our AED had arrived. It was definitely worth the wait!

Q.  Why do you think that it is important to have an AED at your facility?

A.  Our building is not only used for church-related activities, it is also used by many organizations in our surrounding community. As a multi-use building where groups congregate, having an AED at our site means that we can be ready for any sudden cardiac arrest situation that may arise. We are honored to be able to do so. This goal could not have been a reality if not for the dedication of the Callahan Heart Safe Program. We are grateful to be a recipient of our AED.
